Clients in the Community: Desks By Dads

While the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a seemingly endless number of challenges, we are always heartened to learn of and share the many ways individuals and businesses have mobilized to make things better.

When Shulman Rogers clients Jessica and Al Berrellez heard there were children struggling to effectively learn from home, they wanted to help. “Desks by Dads” began as a personal weekend project started by the Berrellez family to provide free desks and chairs to low-income students in need of a dedicated workspace. Today, with the support of friends and volunteers, they have delivered nearly 100 desks and chairs to local families.

“Every kid deserves to have their own little workstation,” says Al Berrellez, who works in the building materials industry. “This was something, to me, that seemed simple enough to do but that would make a big impact in these children’s lives and educational success.”

Shulman Rogers is pleased to support Desks by Dads and share Jessica and Al’s story. To find out more about Desks for Dads, read the Washington Post story here or watch ABC World News’ coverage here. If you would like to contribute to this effort, click here.

Synergy within the DC Startup Community

Anthony Millin, Chair of NEXT Powered by Shulman Rogers, Behind the Scenes at the 50 on Fire Winners Photoshoot

Shulman Rogers’ Anthony Millin recently received DC Inno’s 50 on Fire award for his leadership as Chair of NEXT Powered by Shulman Rogers, a platform designed to provide fixed-fee legal and other business services to startups and emerging growth companies. The 50 on Fire awards highlight people, companies and organizations that have had a banner year in the District’s innovation scene.

It is notable that many of the honorees work collaboratively to sponsor events and programs that support DC’s innovators and founders. Shulman Rogers is especially excited to see that two of our clients, WolfPack and Octopus Interactive, also received 50 on Fire awards.

Jonathan Chashper, CEO and founder of WolfPack, has developed an innovative mobile application to enhance many aspects of group travel. With nearly 100k users, the app is quickly gaining traction.

Octopus is one of the largest ride-share entertainment companies in the world, and boasts partnerships with Disney, Sprint, Walmart, Marriott, FanDuel and others. In addition, Octopus introduced Shulman Rogers to Georgetown Entrepreneurship and facilitated our sponsorship of their Seattle Pitch competition in 2018.  After one of its most successful years yet, Georgetown Entrepreneurship ALSO received the 50 on Fire award.

There is a clear synergy amongst those included on this list (and within the DC innovation community) and Shulman Rogers enthusiastically continues to support the region’s growing Startup sector.

NEXT Powered by Shulman Rogers, with its Premier Partners (Nasdaq, Amazon Web Services, Carta, WEST Growth, Insperity, NFP and First Republic), proudly works alongside the following community partners to support the DC area startup community:
