On June 12, Greg Grant presented “What’s New In Maryland Employment Law!” at the 2018 Annual Conference for the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of Maryland. NAIFA’s annual meeting was held at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium conference center in Annapolis.
Greg spoke on two recent laws passed by the Maryland legislature that impact all Maryland businesses: The Healthy Working Families Act and the Disclosing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Act of 2018. Both laws apply, at least in part, to all businesses that employ individuals in Maryland, regardless of their size.
The Healthy Working Families Act, which went into effect on February 11, 2018, already requires all Maryland employers to provide applicable employees with sick and safe leave (whether paid or unpaid). The Disclosing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Act set to go into effect on October 1, 2018, precludes all Maryland employers from using waivers or otherwise restricting an employee’s right to pursue sexual harassment claims. This new law will also subject larger employers to new disclosure and reporting requirements regarding sexual harassment claims, settlements and the confidentiality of those settlements.
