Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity & Inclusion

At Shulman Rogers, we believe the best legal counsel comes from teams that bring different experiences, perspectives, and ideas to the table. We are committed to fostering a culture where every member of our firm feels respected, supported, and able to contribute fully.

Our attorneys and professionals are recruited, developed, and advanced based on talent, merit, and opportunity. We work intentionally to create an environment where individuals from a wide range of backgrounds can grow, collaborate, and succeed.

Diverse perspectives strengthen our judgment and help us better understand the businesses, industries, and communities our clients represent.

This commitment extends beyond our internal culture. We seek to work with diverse business partners and maintain relationships that reflect the communities we serve. By building teams and partnerships that reflect a broad range of perspectives, we strengthen our ability to advise clients thoughtfully and effectively.

Building Community Within the Firm

Our culture is supported by attorney- and staff-led committees that help shape the firm experience and strengthen our connection to one another and the communities we serve. These groups create opportunities for mentorship, service, professional development, and well-being across the firm.

  • Community Outreach Committee — Coordinates volunteer initiatives and charitable engagement throughout the region.
  • Diversity & Inclusion Committee — Promotes initiatives that support an inclusive workplace and expand opportunity within the profession.
  • Women’s Resource Committee — Supports mentorship, leadership development, and professional advancement for women at the firm.
  • Health & Wellness Committee — Encourages programs and resources that support the well-being of our attorneys and staff.

Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity Goals

Shulman Rogers’ goal is to attract, retain and promote individuals of exceptional ability and talent from all genders and a broad range of racial, social, economic, religious and personal backgrounds. We embrace the principles of equal opportunity and further recognize that promoting a culture of strength based on difference is an integral component of our ongoing quest for excellence.

Inclusion Committee

The Inclusion Committee plans, implements and oversees the firm’s diversity initiatives. The Committee is composed of representatives from senior management, shareholders, associate attorneys and support staff, and is tasked with educating and training the workforce on diversity issues and sponsoring outreach activities and events. The Inclusion Committee works closely with the Executive Committee to carry out these and other initiatives targeted at strengthening diversity throughout the firm.

Our Initiatives

Recruitment and Hiring Initiative

The firm is committed to strengthening its diversity through the recruitment and retention of minority and women attorneys and support staff from all backgrounds. Shulman Rogers continually seeks opportunities to recruit diverse professionals through ongoing partnerships with the Montgomery County Bar Foundation, Maryland’s specialty bar associations and local law schools. The firm also takes advantage of both its mergers and laterals program and summer law clerk program to attract diverse candidates.

Mergers & Laterals Integration Initiative

The Mergers and Laterals Committee actively seeks to attract and retain a diverse population by reaching out to women, racial and ethnic minority candidates. The Committee facilitates the integration of new attorneys of all backgrounds into the firm.

Women’s Resource Committee

The firm supports the Women’s Resource Committee, an initiative launched in 2009 to address the business challenges and opportunities unique to women. The group addresses these issues both for Shulman Rogers’ female attorneys and for existing and prospective female clients. All are welcome to attend.

Community Initiatives

Shulman Rogers undertakes community initiatives on three fronts:

  1. Sponsoring outreach programs that support diversity and inclusion principles
  2. Partnering with a broad array of businesses to purchase products and services
  3. Achieving diversity and inclusion in the legal profession
