Mike Nakamura and Florida Co-Counsel Sean Cronin obtained a $6.5 million award on August 23, 2024, for a well-deserving client and her family. The case involved the negligent performance of gastric sleeve surgery.
Our client is a military spouse who decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery to manage her diabetes. The surgeon was never board-certified in general surgery, and he negligently performed the operation.
The patient developed a leak at the suture site, resulting in gastric acid (similar to hydrochloric acid) spilling all over her internal organs. Due to the surgeon’s lack of proper training and inexperience in dealing with post-operative complications, he did not immediately return her to the operating room to fix the leak and wash out all the acid. Instead, he transferred her to another facility, effectively delaying proper treatment for more than 18 hours.
As a result, our client suffered permanent internal damage, requiring full-time care for the rest of her life. After a lengthy three-week trial, we secured the full amount – $6.5 million – of our life care plan for the client’s future medical needs, as well as compensation for pain and suffering to her, her husband and her two adult children.
