Phil Hochberg Gives Back to the School That Started It All
For more than 60 years, Phil Hochberg has run two careers side by side: one as a sports and entertainment attorney, one as a PA announcer whose voice became part of the soundtrack of Washington sports.
When Phil arrived at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School in 1961, he planned to be a broadcaster. One look at his classmates, who included Marv Albert, Dick Stockton, Ted Koppel, and Hank Greenwald, convinced him to head to law school. He kept announcing on the side, spending six years with the Senators, 38 years with the Redskins, and decades more behind other mics across the region. He was the first non-player, coach, or owner inducted into the Redskins’ Hall of Fame/Ring of Stars, and today he is a member of the Washington D.C. Sports Hall of Fame.
Now Phil is giving back to the school where it all started. He has established the Philip Hochberg Family Newhouse DC Fund for the Syracuse University Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship. The fund will support speakers, student research, and programming at the intersection of sports and democracy.
