Shulman Rogers guides major FCC Rulemaking effort, improves first responders’ telecom system

August 17, 2015

POTOMAC, Md., Aug. 17, 2015 — Shulman Rogers announced the completion of a major six-year effort with Pyramid Communications to enable police and fire departments to obtain access to VHF spectrum for Vehicular Repeater (VRS) use.

The effort began as a result of public safety agencies, which heavily use VHF spectrum for their communications, not being able to obtain sufficient radio coverage inside of many buildings for their emergency operations.

In 2009, Shulman Rogers filed a Notice of Proposed Rule Making with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), on Pyramid’s behalf, seeking the allocation of a specific set of VHF frequencies which could be specifically used for VRS units to address the problem.

The FCC issued a Report & Order earlier this week which included many of the recommendations suggested by the team of Shulman Rogers and Pyramid Communications.  These new rules are significant as they will make it possible for public safety agencies to deploy radios that will increase in-building coverage, ultimately leading to greater first responder safety by increasing their ability to communicate during emergency operations.

This Report & Order not only allocates six frequencies, but it also represents the successful outcome of negotiations and collaborative discussions with first responders, frequency coordinators and the FCC to increase public safety.  A copy of the FCC Report & Order can be found here.
