Sam Spiritos elected Chairman of Best Buddies Maryland

February 25, 2016

Montgomery County Attorney Samuel Spiritos Elected Chairman of Best Buddies Maryland

Baltimore, MD – Best Buddies Maryland announces the recent election of Samuel M. Spiritos of Olney, MD., as chairman of the Best Buddies Maryland Advisory Board. Mr. Spiritos was elected by his fellow board members for his continuing commitment to people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) and his leadership on activities such as the highly successful Best Buddies Friendship Walk, which takes place this year on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Xfinity Center Pavilion in College Park, Md.

“I am looking forward to serving as chairman in memory of my brother, Malcolm, who had Down’s syndrome. He was an incredible brother – very energetic, talented, successful, and highly functioning. He attended the Culinary Institute of America, lived independently, owned a car he loved, and excelled at meaningful jobs, including his last position here at Shulman Rogers,” said Mr. Spiritos, managing shareholder of Shulman Rogers in Potomac, Md. “Malcolm’s perseverance and determination drove his success. My parents recognized early on they needed to involve Malcolm in all activities and make sure he was fully a part of his community. Our parents insisted on integration, not segregation. He was fully included in public schools and vocational schools, which contributed to his success. He had a wonderful lifelong support network of friends. Every person with developmental disabilities should be able to enjoy and succeed in life like Malcolm. I am determined to help Best Buddies Maryland achieve its mission of friendship and employment for people with I/DD.”

A 1984 graduate of University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School of Management), he earned his law degree with honors (1987) from University of Buffalo Law School and his MBA from State University of New York at Buffalo (1988). He grew up in Newburgh, NY and graduated from Newburgh Free Academy. He is a member of the American Bar Association, serves on the Board of Directors for the Montgomery College Foundation, and president of the Best Buddies DC Metro Advisory Board as well.

Mr. Spiritos lives in Olney with his wife, Celia, and his sons Ben, David, and Max.

Best Buddies Maryland, a leader in the global movement to end the isolation of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has programs in 93 schools throughout Maryland.

Best Buddies Maryland has transformed the lives of thousands of students with and without I/DD, serving more than 5,500 individuals and impacting more than 50,000. In addition to serving students, Best Buddies offers an adult friendship Citizens Program and, in 2015, started operating an integrated employment jobs program for adults with I/DD.
