Karl J. Protil, Jr. of SRGPE obtained a verdict of $769,081.71 in a 5 day jury trial in Prince Georges County. The case involved severe injuries to a patient at Prince Georges Hospital. The patient sustained a fractured neck and damage to his spinal cord. The damage resulted in the patient becoming a quadriplegic. He was transferred to the University of Maryland and then another facility in Baltimore where he lived for 41 days before dying from complications relating to his injuries. The jury deliberated and found that the treating cardiologist and attending doctor, Nader Dakak, MD, was responsible for failing to order a neck x-ray in spite of the patient’s complaints of neck pain. Prince Georges Hospital was found negligent, but their negligence was found not to be a cause of the patients injuries. Suit was brought by the patient’s brother. Post-trial motions were denied by the trial judge.
