Continuing its tradition of community service, Potomac, MD-based law firm Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy, & Ecker, PA, provided nearly two-dozen volunteers in conjunction with United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA) to help the ABC show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” to build a new house and community center in the Washington, DC area in August.
The nationally-recognized TV show helps extraordinary people dealing with deteriorating home conditions and the inability to fix them. In a massive volunteer effort headed up by UWNCA, the house was torn down and reconstructed in just one week.
“Lending a hand in this worthwhile community effort is a great opportunity to make a difference for a deserving family,” said Don Rogers, Partner of Shulman Rogers. “In addition to providing legal services to our clients, our attorneys understand the importance of being good citizens and helping our neighbors. Along with United Way, we want to work with others who care about making our community a better place.”
Volunteers from Shulman Rogers went above and beyond the expectations, returning to the site the day before the home was revealed to the family, so they could assist with last minute tasks.
Those from Shulman Rogers were joined by hundreds of others in an effort organized by UWNCA, which is dedicated to addressing affordable housing issues in the greater Washington area. Thousands of volunteers from a number of area businesses provided man power to finish building the home and the community center.
“This was an exceptional opportunity to show the community how much we care,” said Bill Hanbury, President and CEO of UWNCA. “Through this effort, we took a hands-on approach to supporting safe, affordable housing in our area because a place to call home should not be a privilege for our neighbors. It is a basic need, and United Way champions this cause every day.”
Work on the home took place between August 22 and 29. Upon completion, the Trip family set foot into their new home, and community was revealed to the local students.
