After years of trying to help a brother who suffered from undiagnosed and untreated mental health problems, our client struggled with what action was possible as the brother faced foreclosure on his home. The brother’s mental illness precluded him from making proper judgments — or even asking for help — as to the management of his financial affairs including how to address the pending foreclosure on the house. Our client came to us and, within days, we were able to get her appointed as the guardian of her brother’s property on an emergency, temporary basis. As a result of the quick legal action we were able to take — including assistance from attorneys in our real estate department — the house was saved from foreclosure and other steps could be taken to preserve and protect the brother’s assets, while the sister continued her efforts to get her brother the proper care and oversight he so desperately needed over the years.
