Golf Tournament Raises Cancer Awareness in an Effort to Lower DC’s Cancer Rate

October 12, 2009

EagleBank Foundation to host Fifth Annual Fight Against Breast Cancer Golf Tournament

The death rate for cancer patients in Washington, DC is more than seven percent higher than the rest of the country, according to the District’s Health Department. The EagleBank Foundation’s Fifth Annual Fight Against Breast Cancer Golf Tournament was held to raise money for breast cancer patients in the community.

Don Rogers, founding partner of law firm Shulman Rogers, is the Chairman of the EagleBank Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. Under his leadership, the golf tournament has raised more than $750,000 in the past five years for local hospitals and other cancer programs. The foundation also provides funds for free mammograms to DC-area women who cannot afford healthcare.

“One in eight women will face breast cancer in their lifetimes,” said Don Rogers. “We believe that this fundraising event will in some way help to reduce that statistic. Giving back to the community is important to all of the attorneys at Shulman Rogers, and this tournament is a great way to get involved in a very worthy cause.”

The money is distributed to area hospitals. From research to support groups, hospitals such as Suburban, Providence Shady Grove, and Washington Hospital Center have all benefited from the tournament and from the community’s overall support.

“The high cancer rate in the Washington DC area is a clear sign that more needs to be done to prevent this disease from the impacting the lives of our neighbors, colleagues, friends and loved ones,” said Rogers.

This year’s golf tournament sponsors included Shulman Rogers, Gandal, Pordy, Ecker, EagleBank, Ronald D. Paul Companies, and The Meltzer Group. The event took place on Monday October 12, 2009 at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.
