Clients in the News: AHC Featured on Good Morning America

November 11, 2020

The firm’s long-time client, AHC, was recently featured on Good Morning America. AHC was recognized as a non-profit organization that stepped up to meet the essential needs of its residents, more than 7,000 families in Virginia, Maryland and DC. AHC’s resident services program “touched the heart” of Amazon, which recently contributed electronics, food and money to support these programs.

Shulman Rogers was pleased to see AHC receive such well-deserved recognition, but knows well that AHC’s resident services programs are nothing new. These programs began more than 25 years ago, originally as afterschool programs, and now include educational, health and wellness, financial stability, summer camp and senior programs that provide resources for its residents to thrive. Hundreds of community volunteers participate in these programs. Among other achievements through these programs, 100% of high school seniors participating in AHC’s teen program have graduated high school and nearly all of them have gone on to college, many of them the first generation in their family to do so. AHC’s high school residents received $1,240,000 in college tuition grants this past year.

AHC’s mission is to expand and improve quality affordable housing to low and moderate income families in our area, and it has succeeded by anyone’s measure, building or renovating thousands of safe, high quality, and energy efficient homes in Virginia, Maryland and DC. But, as John Welsh (VP, Multifamily Group) and Carlton Miller (VP, Construction) made clear at AHC’s annual meeting last month, AHC’s mission is not just to build buildings, but to build communities that its residents are happy to call home.

Howard Ross has represented AHC as its legal counsel for over 20 years, and has first-hand experience with its resident services programs, having volunteered as an afterschool tutor in one of AHC’s northern Virginia communities. “I have been very fortunate to have AHC as a client. AHC’s representation has allowed me and a number of other professionals at Shulman Rogers to work with smart, energetic and dedicated people on large, sophisticated and cutting-edge real estate projects. More importantly, Shulman Rogers has been fortunate to partner with a client that has done so much good for the community.”

Shulman Rogers is happy to have contributed funds to AHC’s resident services program again this year, and salutes AHC for its inspirational work.
