James M. Hoffman is a principal in the law firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, P.A.  He practices bankruptcy law, creditors' rights and general business law including business planning, contracts, operational issues, shareholder agreements, sale and dissolution of businesses and trademark law.  Mr. Hoffman represents several Chapter 7 Trustees.  He is a member of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland where he served as director for three years and in 1992 and 1993, was chairman of its Chapter 13 Committee.  Mr. Hoffman is also a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Consumer Bankruptcy Division.

With respect to creditors' rights, Mr. Hoffman has focused his practice on representing Chapter 7 Trustees, Chapter 11 Trustees, creditors and some debtors in bankruptcy proceedings.  He is regularly engaged to locate and collect assets in bankruptcy proceedings.  He has represented landlords, secured creditors, lending institutions and creditors pursuing objections to dischargeability.  Also, Mr. Hoffman represented debtors in more than 650 consumer bankruptcy cases, as well as Chapter 11 debtors and creditors.  He lectures on bankruptcy and various business related topics.

Mr. Hoffman graduated cum laude from James Madison University (1982) and earned his J.D. from the University of Maryland Law School (1985).  He is admitted to practice law in Maryland and the District of Columbia.  He co-founded the Shulman Rogers Bankruptcy and Creditors' Rights Group in 1995.  Mr. Hoffman has lectured frequently to various groups on bankruptcy and business related topics, including the Women in Business Entrepreneurial Success in 2000, 2001 and 2003, hosted by the Rockville Chamber of Commerce and at the Annual Spring Break Continuing Legal Education Weekend, May 2000, sponsored by the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland.  He is a coauthor of Proper Use and Abuse of Family Limited Partnerships, Journal of the American Society of CLU &ChFC, July 1998 and Guiding the Court - Don't Underestimate Bankruptcy Clauses in Commercial Leases, Commercial Leasing Law & Strategy, April 1997.
