
Edward M. Hanson, Jr. is a principal in the law firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, P.A. His practice concentrates on sales and acquisitions of real property, commercial leasing, commercial real estate secured lending, and other complex commercial real estate transactions. In recent years, a considerable portion of his practice has been focused on the leasing, acquisition and disposition of office/retail assets on behalf of a national pension fund advisor and its clients.
Mr. Hanson’s recent transactions include the following:
- Representation of an institutional investor in the purchase of a 2 building complex containing 550,000 square feet of office space in the City of Arlington, Virginia
- Representation of a national non-profit tenant in the leasing of 77,000 square feet of office space for its headquarters in Washington, DC
- Representation of an institutional owner of a 630,000 square foot office/retail complex in Crystal City, Virginia in leasing 70,000 square feet of office space to a for-profit adult education provider
- Representation of a developer of a luxury residential condominium building in Montgomery County, Maryland in the sale of a first floor condominium consisting of all the building’s retail space
- Representation of a biochemical products company in the purchase of a production facility in Terre Haute, Indiana
- Representation of a purchaser of a promissory note secured by 8 research and development buildings in Montgomery County, Maryland
Mr. Hanson joined Shulman Rogers in 1978 after spending a year clerking with Judge Philip M. Fairbands of the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He subsequently received both his law degree and a Masters of Public Policy Sciences from Duke University.
Mr. Hanson devotes a substantial amount of his time to civic and charitable activities. He is currently co-chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Duke Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. He recently stepped down as president and trustee of the Montgomery Parks Foundation. He is a past-president of the Duke University National Alumni Association, a past member of the Board of Trustees of the University, and a past member of the Board of Visitors of the Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University. He was a graduate of Leadership Montgomery and a past-member of its Board of Directors. Mr. Hanson has also served as General Counsel to the Montgomery County Students Construction Trades Foundation and as a speaker for MICPEL and for the Georgetown University Law Center Continuing Legal Education Division program on Commercial Lease Negotiations.
